What
we offer
Camp
Banksia is a modern beachside camp & conference centre for
pre-booked groups. It is nestled into a quiet 6ha coastal site
and is surrounded by native bush and is home to much native wildlife,
especially birds.
Port
Sorell is very popular for fishing, boating, swimming and golf
- the Port Sorell Golf Club is right next door. Pleasant walks
exist along the golden sands of Shearwater and Hawley Beach and
a cycling track passes adjacent to the camp.
The
camp has a range of sporting opportunities available including
athletic track, netball courts, a large playing field and two
tennis courts. Indoor sports include basketball, netball, badminton
and volley ball. A kayak pond also serves as a nature study area.
Cabin
accommodation
There are 150 beds, most of which are in 6 berth bunk cabins and
are arranged in clusters of 5 or 6. Each cluster has its own set
of 3 shared toilets and showers. All bedrooms have electric heating.
Family
rooms
There is a separate apartment with 2 en-suite family rooms that
share a kitchen/dining room. This apartment can sleep 14 plus
an extra 2 in an adjoining bedroom and is available for hire separately
from the rest of the camp. It comes fully equipped with all bedding
and towels plus crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment.
Dining
areas
Guests eat in the main hall/dining room which is a bright sunny
building that has pleasant views out to the duck pond. There are
two kitchen alcoves for preparing hot drinks and snacks. It has
electric heating as well as a wood heater. An outdoor barbecue
facility is available.
Group
use
Camp Banksia is available for hire by pre-booked school, church,
sporting, community & family groups who are looking for fully
catered accommodation in a safe peaceful private location. As
well, it is available for groups wishing to just use its facilities
without the need to stay over night.
It
is an ideal venue for wedding receptions, anniversaries, conferences
and seminars.
Bus groups, for example, are welcome, for lunches and morning
& afternoon teas.
Camp
Banksia is not associated with any particular religious group
but all religious groups are welcome to use its facilities.
The
Camp Banksia Community Centre is also available for indoor sport
events and community meetings.
History
Camp Banksia was established in the mid 1950's and for many years
was operated by the National Fitness Council. It has undergone
many developments over the years; the main dining hall/meeting
room, kitchen and manager's office was completed in 1993 and the
gymnasium/community centre was constructed in 1997. It is now
owned by the Tasmanian State Government and is leased on a long
term basis to the Latrobe
Council. The Camp Banksia Controlling Authority manages the
camp's operation on behalf of the council and a full time manager
is employed.
Making
a booking
Persons wishing to use any of the facilities at Camp Banksia should
contact the camp manager to discuss their requirements and the
camp's availability. They will then be asked to fill in a booking
application form and agree to the camp's terms of use. A deposit
