Indoor Activity & Common Areas
Indoor
activity and common areas
These consist of the Main Hall/Dining room, the Camp Banksia
Community Centre plus the Resource Room.
The
Main Hall
This
is a modern large sunny building that will seat at least 150
for meals or 200 for a meeting or conference.
It
has electric heating as well as a wood heater and there are
two kitchen alcoves for the preparation of hot drinks and snacks.
It is centrally located within the camp, has a pleasant view
over a grassed area to the duck pond and, being adjacent to
the camp kitchen, is where most meals are served.
The
Community Centre
This
contains a gymnasium with a half size basketball court (which
can be set up for netball, volleyball or badminton if required).
There are also indoors bowls mats, table tennis tables and an
eight ball table which can be set up. Also in the Community
Centre is a meeting room/supper room. This too is a sunny room
with a gas heater and a kitchen alcove with sink, small refrigerator
and a microwave oven. Upstairs is another meeting room/lounge
room. (See description under accommodation.)
The
Resource Room
This
is located near the kayak/duck pond and is set up with tables,
chairs and a white board. It is useful as a teaching area for
nature study or water watch work etc.
Outdoor Facilities
The
extensive 6 ha grounds of Camp Banksia are mostly grassed with
some areas of natural bush leading in to a neighbouring nature
reserve. The facilities on site include a kayak/duck pond (depending
on who gets there first!) and a variety of sports and entertainment
areas.

is very popular for swimming, fishing, sailing and most
other water activities.

Security & Safety
A
resident caretaker is on site whenever a camp is present.
There
is a fire alarm system covering all bedrooms, dining rooms and
bathrooms that is centrally monitored by the Tasmanian Fire
Brigade and is regularly inspected.
All
rooms and cabins have there own individual key with a sub-master
key available to group leaders for each cabin cluster.
The
camp is only available to pre-booked groups or families. No
casual users are permitted thus ensuring the privacy and security
of people using the camp.
Groups
are permitted to consume alcohol but must do so in a responsible
manner.
Accessibility
Most
of the facilities at Camp Banksia are wheel chair accessible.
There
is a ramp to the Main Hall/Dining Room. The toilet in this area
has level access with plenty of extra internal room plus hand
rails.
The
first four cabins in each cluster (except Willows cluster) are
level access and have a disabled access toilet & shower
room.
All
other bunk cabins as well as the Banksia Retreat complex have
two steps up into each of the rooms.
The
lower beds in each of the bunk cabins are quite low. Some people
may need assistance to access these.
The
camp Community Centre has level access (to downstairs area)
and also has a disabled access toilet & shower room.
The
camp site itself is very flat and there are no changes in level
from the sealed car park.
There
are concrete paths connecting all of the buildings.
